Kid's DIY Yarn Wrapped Stegosaurus

How to make your own Yarn-Wrapped Stegosaurus!

Materials List:

Sari Silk Ribbon yarn in a color of your choice
1 large plastic bottle (e.g. a milk jug)
2 paper towel tubes (or 4 toilet paper tubes)
1 piece of cardboard
Masking tape
Hot glue gun
Pom poms
Pipe cleaners
2 googly eyes
Paint

Procedure

Step 1:

Construct your dinosaur shape. Begin by cutting your first paper towel tube into 4 equal length pieces. Use masking tape to tape these four pieces onto the bottom of your plastic bottle. These will become your dinosaur’s legs. Next, cut two slightly longer pieces from the second tube. Make roughly 1-inch cuts around the end of each of these tubes. Pinch the cut ends closed and wrap with masking tape to secure.

Tape the open ends of these pieces to the plastic bottle, one on either end, to become the dinosaur’s head and tail. Cut small triangles from your cardboard. Use hot glue to glue the triangles along the dinosaur’s back and tail, creating the stegosaurus’s spikes.

Step 2.

Take one end of your yarn and glue it to the plastic bottle using hot glue. Wrap the yarn around the bottle, overlapping as you go, to cover all the plastic. Once it is sufficiently covered, trim the yarn and glue the end to the bottle. Repeat this process to cover each leg, the head, and tail. Do not wrap the cardboard spikes.

Step 3.

Use your paint to paint the cardboard spikes and, if you’d like, paint some spots on the dinosaur’s body! Use a color of paint that contrasts with your yarn so that the spots and stripes stand out!

Step 4.

Using your hot glue gun, glue pom poms onto the dinosaur’s body to create more spots. You can also glue pipe cleaners around the edges of your cardboard spikes. Lastly, glue the googly eyes onto either side of the dinosaur’s head!
