DIY: Decorate A Summer Beach Hat

Summer is here, which means lots of time in the sun. It’s important to keep your face protected from all that time in the sun, but constantly reapplying sunblock just sometimes isn’t possible, and sweaty baseball caps may kill your “cute summer outfit” vibes.

Make a fun summer hat (with tassels or pom poms) from a few materials, a simple straw hat, and only 10 minutes! Most colorful beach hats are over $50 in stores, but you can make your very own for under $25. You can find a straw hat at a dollar store, or maybe you already have one sitting in your closet!

Step By Step

Step 1

Gather Materials

  • Darn Good Yarn Ribbon 5 Color Sample Cards
  • Darn Good Yarn Mini Tassels
  • Straw Hat
  • Scissors

Step 2

Choose 3 colors (or 1 of each color on your sample card!) and cut the ribbon into strips that are approximately 40 inches long. Thread the mini-tassels onto each ribbon, placing them randomly throughout.

Step 3

Wrap the ribbon around the straw hat - you can either twist or braid the different colored ribbon together before you wrap it around the hat, or you can simply wrap the ribbon around the hat, ribbon by ribbon. Join the two ends of the thread together by making a knot, and leave some dangling ends.

  • Darn Good Yarn Felt Balls
  • Straw Hat
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step 2

Wrap one ribbon (We know...it’s tough to choose only one color!) onto the base of the hat about 3-4 times, and make a knot. Cut the ends.

Step 3

Take your felt balls and lay them out in the order that you want them on your hat. Let your creativity be your guide!

Step 4

Carefully glue each felt ball onto the ribbon, spacing them evenly along the surface. We took a few mirrored felt balls and clustered them on one little part of the ribbon to create a bolder look!

That’s it! Ready for summer?
