Galentine’s Day and Its Link to Crafting

Galentine’s Day and Its Link to Crafting

Okay, let's start at the beginning..

Did you know that Galentine’s Day, typically observed on the 13th of February, originated on a hit sitcom back in 2010? Oh yeah, gal - Galentine’s Day was created in a season two episode of the tv series Parks and Recreation. I didn’t know that (so six points to Hufflepuff if you did), I just assumed it was a clever play on words that, even if we tried, we wouldn’t be able to pinpoint its origins.

So, let’s take a mini-dive into what the internet is teaching me about this Festival of Female Friendship (I’m proud of this wordplay).

Like I was saying..

Galentine’s Day was invented by Leslie Knope, portrayed by Amy Poehler on Parks and Rec, who lets us viewers know that it’s “the best day of the year”. (Season 2, Episode 16 if you’re interested.)

Usually the holiday is held the day before Valentine’s Day, but I’ve also just learned that it can be celebrated anytime between the 1st and 13th of February. (Just an interjection - I feel like Galentine’s could be a month-long celebration - like snag the girls, throw on pink sparkly outfits, cue up Dua Lipa and *dance the night away*..but I’m also the type to keep my Christmas tree up until June so maybe I shouldn’t be the one to give holiday input.)

Galentine’s Day is (obviously) the blend of the word “valentine” with “gal” - and the day is just that: a day to spend with your girls (your besties, your bosom-buddies, your pals, chums, comrades - yes, I have a thesaurus) - while Valentine’s Day is set up to show appreciation for your romantic partners (oou la la), Galentine’s Day is there to spread love to your platonic lady pals. As Leslie says, “February 14, Valentine's Day, is all about romance. But February 13, Galentine's Day, is about celebrating lady friends. It's wonderful, and it should be a national holiday." (No work on the 13th? Got it.)

How is this linked to crafting? I thought you’d never ask.

On G-Day, is it alright if I call it G-Day? Stop me if you hate it - anyway.. On G-Day, Leslie likes to give out hand-crafted gifts like a “bouquet of hand-crocheted flower pens, (and) a mosaic portrait for each of you made from the crushed bottles of your favorite diet soda..” and while those may be on the more ridiculous side of craft examples (though, I would use a crocheted flower pen DAILY) I think that the idea of crafting adorable gifts for your gals is the most creative way to show a friend how much you care about them.

Happy Galentine's Day!

Let's drink mimosas and craft!
