Eco Friendly Home Prep Products for the Holidays

Even though there might be snow where you live, you can still have a green Christmas. How? By using eco-friendly and environmentally safe products as you prepare for holiday celebrations!

Between the cleaning products as we get ready for guests to come over and the waste created by unwrapped gifts, the holidays can take a toll on the environment. But, it doesn't have to be this way! When we make conscious choices to use greener, more natural, and more sustainable products, we lessen the negative effect that our holiday season has on the planet.

At Darn Good Yarn, we take measures to reduce our carbon footprint in our business practices. We want to help you reduce your carbon footprint as well so that we can care for the environment together!

Here are some eco-friendly products that you can use to prepare your home for the holidays!

 All-Natural Household Cleaner

One big part of the holiday season is, of course, getting together to celebrate with relatives and friends! However, when the party or dinner is at your house, this is often proceeded by a great deal of household cleaning. Because many household cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful the environment and to you, we suggest using all-natural household cleaners that you can make yourself at home!

A large variety of natural cleaning products can be made right at home. For instance, a tile surface cleaner can be made by combing white vinegar with lavender oil. You can create your own oven cleaner using white vinegar, baking soda, and coarse salt. You can even make dusting spray at home with olive oil, white vinegar, lavender oil, and lemongrass oil! We encourage you to research even more recipes for natural cleaners!

Recycled Wrapping Paper

Small package wrapped in brown paper with blue and green yarn tied around in the shape of a Christmas tree

When we say recycled wrapping paper, we're not talking about carefully and slowly peeling open your gifts so that the gift wrap can be used next year. We're talking about re-purposing paper products that you probably already have in your home as gift wrap! Items from used newspapers and magazines to that brown paper that sometimes comes included as packing in mailed parcels can be decorated and used to wrap gifts!

Reusing paper items to wrap gifts not only cuts down on waste, but also, in most cases, ensures that the gift wrap you're using is biodegradable. Use ink, paint, dye, stickers, or even coffee (for an aged look) to color and decorate plain newspaper or packing paper to create beautiful holiday gift wrap!
