A yarn club is a subscription to yarn. You sign up once, and on a schedule — usually monthly — a package of yarn chosen by someone else arrives at your door. Some clubs are run by a single dyer, some by a shop, some by a company like ours. The shape is the same: you give up choosing the color, and in return you get the small, reliable thrill of a surprise.
Here's how they work, what varies, and how to tell if one is for you.
The three kinds of yarn club
Dyer clubs. An independent hand-dyer opens a round of their club a few times a year. Members get one or two skeins of that dyer's yarn, often in an exclusive colorway. Usually sock or fingering weight. No pattern. Rounds sell out quickly.
Shop clubs. A local yarn shop or online retailer picks a different yarn each month from brands they carry. More variety in weight and fiber; sometimes a pattern.
Monthly box clubs. A company builds a box around a theme: yarn plus a pattern, a notion, something to read. This is what most people mean by "yarn of the month." It's the kind we run, so it's the kind we can describe in the most detail.
How Yarn of the Month works, month by month
You join. One click on the Yarn of the Month page. $29 a month plus shipping. No commitment beyond the current month.
Nicole picks a theme. Our founder chooses the month's theme and the yarn to match it: three skeins of small-batch recycled silk, hand-dyed by artisans in India, in colors and weights that fit the theme. Members don't pick the colors. That's by design, and most members say it's the reason they stayed.
The box is packed. Three skeins (about $54 of yarn at retail). A surprise tool or notion worth $6 or more. A knit and crochet pattern written for that month's yarn. The artisan booklet: who dyed your yarn and where they work.
It ships. Shipping is charged on top of the $29; you'll see the rate at checkout.
You make something. The pattern is there so the yarn doesn't become stash. If you'd rather freelance, our one-skein project list works with what a typical box sends.
Repeat, or don't. Cancel anytime from your account. Members who stay get a monthly coupon code, double reward points on everything, and first access to new products.
What makes a yarn club worth it
Three things, in our experience:
- Yarn value above the price. You should be getting more yarn, at retail, than you're paying. Three skeins at around $54 for $29 is the math behind ours.
- A reason to use the yarn right away. A pattern written for the box. Without one, a club becomes a stash subscription.
- Surprise you can live with. If you need control over color, buy yarn the normal way. A club is for the other kind of making.
Questions to ask before joining any yarn club
What weight, and does it change? Dyer clubs are usually one weight. Monthly box clubs rotate — ours sends lace some months, DK or worsted others — which is either a feature or a bug depending on you.
What fiber? Wool, silk, cotton, blends. If you have a wool sensitivity, check. Our yarn is recycled silk, which is wool-free.
How do I cancel? From your account, in one step, is the standard. Anything needing an email or a call is a flag.
Is there a pattern? This one predicts whether you'll stay better than anything else.
Can I gift it? Most monthly clubs can be given for a set number of months. Ask before you buy.
Yarn club vs. mystery box
A yarn club is recurring; a mystery box is one and done. If you want to try the surprise-yarn experience without a subscription, a mystery box is the way. Our Editor's Box is nine or more skeins of recycled silk, packed by hand in mixed weights and colors, $119 to $129 for $162 or more of yarn, no recurring charge. Many members started there.
What members tell us
The two lines we hear most often: "I never would have picked this color and now I love it," and "the pattern means I actually use the yarn." That's the whole idea of a yarn club. A little box of new, once a month, chosen by someone who thought about it, with the first project already decided.

Yarn club FAQ
How much does a yarn club cost?
Most monthly yarn clubs run $20 to $60 a month depending on skein count and fiber. Yarn of the Month is $29 a month plus shipping for three hand-dyed skeins, a notion, a pattern and the artisan booklet.
Do yarn clubs let you choose colors?
Usually not; the surprise is the point. Some dyer clubs let you pick a palette (warm, cool, neutral). Monthly box clubs like ours choose for you around a theme.
Can I pause a yarn club?
Most monthly clubs let you cancel and rejoin freely. Yarn of the Month can be cancelled anytime from your account and restarted whenever you like.
