Sustainable Crafting and Fashion | March Edition - Darn Good Yarn

Sustainable Crafting and Fashion | March Edition

Written by Kate Curry

March 2022

This March, thanks to our wonderful community, we have been able to plant 944 trees and save 12,765 pounds of material from landfills! These materials, textiles, fibers, paper, and wood, have been reclaimed by our artisans and created into the stunning clothing and crafting supplies that we all love!

To put the sheer amount of material into perspective, here are some things that weigh 12,765 pounds!

  • An african elephant
  • 14 horses
  • 5,500,000 jelly bean

Totals for 2022

  • No. of trees planted: 2,372
  • Pounds of waste material saved:  33,083

Thanks to awesome friends like you, our artisans are able to save thousands of pounds of fabric from their communal landfills!

Tree iconTrees.Org x Darn Good Yarn

Every purchase from our Be Darn Good Collection, gives back to the global community. For each purchase from this collection, a tree is planted by our friends over at trees.org! For 2022,  to exceed last year's milestone, we hope to plant 30,000 trees this year with trees for the future. This amazing group works to plant trees in areas that have been affected by soil erosion and climate change. With each tree planted there is hope for the future -more food, more wildlife, and more jobs!

In March, thanks to our community, we were able to plant 944 trees. That  makes a total of 33,083 trees for the year of 2022 so far! One step closer to our goal!

March's Most Popular Yarn!

The most popular yarn this month - the three time reigning champion is our Twist Sport Weight Silk Yarn!

With the purchases of this yarn in March, 442 pounds of fiber have been saved!

A few fingers are holding a cute little blue octopus amigurumi- made out of our twist lace yarn. To the right of the little octopus is a cake of the same blue twist yarn.

Lookin' Good and Doin' Good!

Our sari wrap skirt in the plus/XL size was the most popular clothing item in March! These skirts are hand sewn out of reclaimed saris and are one of a kind and reversible! Thanks to the sales of XL skirts, we have been able to save 3,123 pounds of sari material!

Looking gorgeous in the sunshine!

If you're not a crafter (no judgements) we have a Facebook group for our fashion-lovers! We love to see people's Outfit Of The Day (OOTD) and people getting inspired by and supporting each other!

Yarn Of The Month® Club

The creative Yarn of the Month community helped save 409 pounds of fiber in March. With each person that subscribes, we are able to protect the employment of our incredible artisans like Sabeeha, Gurusiddappa, and Sabreen. For every 1,000 subscribers, our club can support one artisan for an entire year!

Two Indian women, one wearing a lime green sari, the other wearing a yellow sari, are outside, hanging bright green yarn out to dry in the sun.
Artisans handmake all of our yarn - from spinning to shipping!
