Before You Start
The Half Double Crochet (abbreviated HDC) is between a single and double crochet in height. Instead of working off of two loops you pull the yarn through three loops on the hook.
Step By Step
Step 1
Start with a slip not. Insert your hook and start with a chain. Chain 10 stitches loosely for your foundation chain.
Step 2
Yarn over
Step 3
Find the second chain stitch from your hook, this is the chain that you will be working into.
Step 4
Insert your hook into the top loop of the second chain stitch from your hook.
Step 5
Yarn-over, and pull through.
Step 6
You will now have 3 loops on your crochet hook.
Step 7
Yarn-over.
Step 8
Pull through all 3 loops. You have just completed your first half double crochet stitch.
Step 9
Repeat steps 2-8 into each consecutive stitch across the row until all chain stitches have been worked.
Step 10
Once you make it to the end, to start your next row. You will chain one, and then turn your work.
Step 11
The single chain stitch will account for your turning chain. Find your second double crochet stitch on your next row, insert needle and start steps 2-8 once again. Once you are done with your row - you will continue to chain one and turn your work. You have successfully learned the Half Double Crochet Stitch!
