Crafts for Kids: The Recycled Mermaid

Who doesn't love mermaids?

Who doesn't love crafting their very own magical yarn mermaid?! Join us while we make our new favorite craft for kids! This is the perfect craft for when your kids are home this year and are looking for something to create! Completing this craft will be great practice for fine motor skills and hand eye coordination as the children thread, tie and wrap the yarn!

Materials

  • Cardboard
  • Brown and green acrylic paint
  • Darn Good Yarn of your choice! We used the Yarn & Ribbon 5 Color Sample Cards in Rainbow Lux
  • 2 Shells
  • Permanent markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Hole-puncher

Instructions

Step 1:

Draw the outline of a mermaid onto a piece of cardboard and cut it out.

Step 2:

Paint the mermaid using acrylic paint. Paint the top half using a color skin tone of your choice. Paint the bottom half green.

Step 3:

Once all of your paint has dried, use permanent markers to draw the mermaid’s face.

Step 4:

Add holes along the mermaid’s hairline using a hole puncher.

Step 5:

Create the mermaid’s hair by cutting yarn into equal length pieces. Thread each yarn through a hole and knot it.

Step 6:

Wrap yarn around the mermaid’s tail. Create a knot near the mermaid’s waistband near the end when finished to secure the yarn into place.

Step 7:

Glue on two shells for the mermaid’s bikini using a hot glue gun.
