It's November, which means it's time for turkey! Today we're sharing an adorable tutorial by Amanda Kattner of What the Bobbin, a DIY Applique Turkey Towel! Learn to sew an extra cute fall-themed tea towel to use as holiday decor or a hostess gift. Let's get started!
Materials
Hand Towel
Brown, yellow, and orange Felt
Steam-a-Seam Fusible Double-sided Webbing
Buttons
Tracing marker
Sewing machine, scissors, and thread
Instructions
1. Find a flat drawing turkey template you like or draw your own.
2. Trace the drawing onto the gridded side of your Steam-a-Seam.
3. Pull off the non-gridded side of the steam a seam. Place the sticky side down on the wrong side of your chosen fabric for each piece.
4. Cut out the shapes of your Turkey. They are now essentially fabric stickers. Arrange and rearrange on your hand towel until you’re happy!
5. Once you’re happy with the placement of your fabric pieces, iron them down onto your hand towel.
6. Choose your sewing threads for sewing the edges of you turkey pieces. I chose matching threads, but you do you!
7. Set your sewing machine to sew a satin stitch, or zig zag stitch with the stitch length as low as it will go.
8. Sew a satin stitch around your feathers, making sure you are only sewing through one layer of your towel. I pushed and pulled the fabric to give the edges a more irregular feather-like feel.
9. Straight stitch around all the other shapes.
10. Sew buttons for the turkey eyes, by hand or by machine.
Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
