Crochet Jewelry – “Dream of Freedom” Necklace – Darn Good Yarn

October 4, 2013

Need some great projects using small leftover amounts from your Darn Good Yarn stash?  You can’t go wrong with great jewelry!

French Darn Good Yarn creator extraordinaire Ambre - seen here wearing her “Dream of Freedom” necklace – sent us this free pattern using Firecracker Recycled Resolution silk yarn and bright coral Banana Fiber yarn.

Of course, you can choose any colors you like! To make this necklace, you just need to know some basic crochet stitches: chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet and double crochet.  That’s it!

Here’s the finished necklace in all of its funky glory:

Let’s get started!  Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Size E Crochet Hook
  2. 16 large glass beads
  3. Bright Coral Banana Fiber Yarn or, any other color you like – found here.

Of course, you can use whatever great Darn Good Yarn you like, the ones listed are just the ones used to make the necklace shown.

Row 1: Start with the Firecracker yarn and chain 55 stitches – make sure to leave at least a 5 inch tail at beginning of ch.

Row 2: Dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc in each chain.  54 dc.

Row 3: Dc in each st across, after last dc, ch 10, ss into the base of the first dc in the first row.

Row 4: Sc 20 sts into the ch sp just made, ending at the top of row 3.

Sc in all stitches across, bind off, leaving at least a 5 inch tail of yarn.

Thread the beginning yarn tail and the ending yarn tail through one of the beads, tie off at base of necklace.  It’ll look like this:

Now it’s time to add the dangling chains from the main necklace.  As shown, there are 6 dangling chains, 3 of the banana fiber yarn, 3 from the firecracker yarn.

To make the chains:

Chain 1: With the firecracker yarn, thread 5 beads before you start.  Leave a 5 inch tail of yarn. Ch 7, add bead (ch13, add bead) 4 times, ch 6 after last bead added.  Leave 5 inch tail at end of chain.  65 stitches and 5 beads.

Chain 2: With firecracker yarn, ch 67, making sure to leave 5 inch tail at beginning and end of chain.

Chain 3: With firecracker yarn, thread 5 beads onto yarn, leave 5 inch tail at start of ch.  Ch 7, add bead (ch 14, add bead) 4 times, ch 7 after last bead added.  Leave 5 inch tail at end of chain.  70 stitches and 5 beads.

Chain 4: With banana fiber yarn, ch 60, leaving 5 inch tails at beginning and end.

Chain 5: With banana fiber yarn, ch 63, leaving 5 inch tails at beginning and end.

Chain 6: With banana fiber yarn, thread 5 beads onto yarn, leave 5 inch tail at start of chain.  Ch 7, add bead (ch 15, add bead) 4 times, ch 8 after last bead added.  Leave 5 inch tail at end of chain.  75 stitches and 5 beads.

Lay out the chains in order of length, and use the ends to tie them onto the main crocheted portion of the necklace.

You can fray the ends of the yarn to create a feathered look, or tie them and add a spot of glue to the knot to seal it.

You’re all set!

You can play with different yarns, different beads, whatever you like!  Go nuts!  And happy crafting!
