How To Knit: Cable Stitches and SSK

Before You Start

Having a solid knitting foundation is recommended before learning how to SSK (Slip, Slip, Knot), and some of these Cable Stitches. If you are looking to learn the basics of knitting, check out our How To Knit tutorial series!

Step By Step

Gather Materials

  • Darn Good Yarn’s Worsted Weight Roving Silk Yarn
  • Circular Needles - 6.00mm / US 10, 16”
  • Cable Needle

Four-Stitch Cable (C4F)

Step 1

Beginning with your work on your needles, wherever the pattern calls for the C4F, slip the next 2 stitches from the needle on the left side onto your cable needle. Hold the cable needle in front of your work!

Step 2

Knit 2 stitches from the left handed needle

Step 3

Knit 2 stitches from the cable needle

Six-Stitch Cable (C6F)

Step 1

Beginning with your work on your needles, wherever the pattern calls for the C6F, slip 3 stitches from the needle on the left onto the cable needle. Hold the cable needle in front of your work!

Step 2

Knit 3 stitches from the left handed needle

Step 3

Knit 3 stitches from the cable needle

Six Stitches Cable Back (C6B)

Step 1

Place 3 stitches on the cable needle - hold the cable needle behind your work!

Step 2

Knit 3

Step 3

K3 from the cable needle.

Slip, Slip, Knit (there are no pictures for this part!)

Step 1

Slip 2 stitches from the left needle onto the right needle, one at a time, as if you were going to knit each one.

Step 2

Insert the left needle into the front of the 2 stitches you just placed on the right needle

Step 3

Knit the two stitches together through the back loops
