Mohair is sourced from the fleece of Angora goats, which boast long, lustrous locks. The fiber's composition comprises a protein called keratin, known for its strength and elasticity. This natural resilience makes Mohair yarn resistant to wrinkles and stretching, ensuring longevity in finished projects. Mohair fibers have a distinctive scale structure, imparting a silky-smooth texture and a natural sheen to the yarn. These inherent qualities make Mohair an exceptional choice for creating garments, accessories, and home decor items with unparalleled softness and durability.
Blending Mohair with silk creates a luxurious yarn that combines the best of both fibers. Mohair contributes its softness, warmth, and resilience, while silk adds a glossy sheen and enhances drape. Mohair silk blends offer a sumptuous yarn experience, perfect for crafting elegant garments and accessories with a touch of sophistication. The blend of Mohair and silk lends itself well to delicate lacework, creating ethereal shawls, wraps, and scarves that drape gracefully around the body. Additionally, Mohair silk blends elevate classic sweater patterns, adding a subtle shimmer and luxurious texture to everyday wearables.
Angora goats, which primarily thrive in South Africa, produce Mohair through an annual shearing process. Unlike sheep, these goats have a unique ability to grow a new fleece every year, making Mohair a renewable resource. Furthermore, Mohair is biodegradable, ensuring minimal ecological footprint throughout its lifecycle.
The versatility of Mohair yarn opens up a myriad of creative possibilities for knitting, crocheting, and crafting enthusiasts. Mohair's lightweight and insulating properties make it ideal for crafting cozy sweaters, scarves, and shawls that offer warmth without bulk. Its inherent elasticity lends itself well to intricate lace patterns and delicate stitches, adding an elegant touch to any project. Mohair blends beautifully with other fibers, such as wool or silk, allowing for endless customization and experimentation. Beyond wearables, Mohair yarn can be used to create plush blankets, decorative pillows, and even luxurious toys, elevating any space with its plush texture and timeless appeal.
Working with Mohair yarn requires some considerations to make the most of its unique qualities. Here are a few tips for crafting with Mohair:
Whether used alone or combined with silk, Mohair yarn offers a truly exquisite crafting experience, bringing sophistication and luxury to every project. So, why not explore the timeless allure of Mohair and embark on your next creative journey with this exceptional fiber? Happy crafting!

If you’re an HGTV fan, love to browse home goods stores, or maybe you're constantly thinking up new ways to decorate your home with cozy textiles, you may have heard the term "Kantha" thrown around quite a bit.
Lately, it seems like kantha quilts, and other stitched up goods, are everywhere! Whether we’re scrolling through Instagram or reading the latest blog posts, these bright, beautiful, and sustainable patterns seem to be hitting our feeds at every turn.
Kantha, an ancient embroidery tradition, originated in the eastern regions of the South Asia, particularly in Bengal. Historically, it served as a means for rural women to upcycle old saris and garments into warm blankets, showcasing intricate stitching techniques and storytelling through patterns.
Kantha can be found in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bangladesh, and Odisha located on the Bay of Bengal. So, we refer to this craft as “Bengali” rather than Bangladeshi, because it is practiced throughout the wider area. Women in these regions have been practicing Kantha embroidery since ancient times.
The word “Kantha” is pronounced KAHN-taa. In general practice, the word refers to two things:
In Sanskrit, the word “Kantha” means rags.
But these blankets aren’t usually produced out of actual rags. They are a mix of old saris and other discarded pieces of fabric, giving it all a new life. Never meant to be used as accent pieces, the original intent of these quilts was to keep people warm while recycling old fabric. Talk about sustainability.
Much like quilting traditions in the United States, Kantha quilting could take years to complete and are often embroidered with patterns that tell stories, expressed wishes, and indicated the product's maker.
The first written mention of Bengali Kantha appeared about five hundred years ago, in the Sri Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita, a book by Krishnadas Kaviraj.
In the book, the author makes note of a Kantha quilt sent to him by his mother. It’s not so hard to imagine the love and care a mother would put into the careful stitching and choice of fabrics. She might have sewn her own saris into the quilt or those of other female family members.
While today’s Kantha quilts and other Kantha products may not be produced in such an intimate fashion, they do touch on that emotional and family-focused tradition, one that not only reaches back through many generations but can also be felt and understood by people across cultures and continents.
So, you’ve decided to incorporate Kantha into your home. What’s the best way to feature them? As it turns out, the options are numerous.
A Kantha quilt makes an inspiring accent piece. With its bright colors, interesting patterns, and unique stitching, your blanket will surely be noticed by visitors.
Why not give it an even bigger spotlight? All-white or all-grey bedding is one ideal backdrop for a colorful Kantha throw. Layered on top or draped over the end of the bed, the rich colors will really pop. You can try the same look on an upholstered chair or couch. In a room that has been following a strict minimalist aesthetic, a Kantha quilt can turn up the color volume in a coherent, measured way and bring warmth and richness into a room.
You can even take the look outside: What about a Kantha blanket on the beach? It makes the ideal sitting space for your next picnic, beach day, movie night in the park, or other outdoor adventure. Soft and durable, this piece will outlast the tireless summer days.
If you already have a laid-back, bohemian style, a Kantha may incorporate rather seamlessly into your everyday life and home design. DGY offers up several Kantha goods for enriching your everyday with sustainable and upcycled designs!

Bleeding typically happens for one reason: the dye hasn’t fully attached itself to the yarn.
Most types of yarn are dyed using the acid method. This is done by combining the yarn, the dye, and an acid-based fixative which ensures that the dye will adhere to the yarn. This is how we are able to achieve deep saturated colors across all types of fibers.
When the dye does not fully attach to the fiber, the dye will bleed or rub off. This is why most yarn dyers will rinse their yarn to ensure any loose pigment is rinsed off. Sometimes a funky skein or two slips on by, meaning you’ve gotten a skein of bleeding yarn in your order. This extra dye can stain your hands, clothes, notions, or the other color yarn in your project.
Note: The methods outlined below are specifically designed for natural fibers and may not be effective for acrylic or polymer-based fibers. It is essential to note that these techniques are tailored to address bleeding concerns in natural yarn. Attempting these methods on synthetic fibers may not yield the desired results. Always consider the fiber content of your yarn before applying any preventive or corrective measures!
For the more cautious crafters, they will often test rinse their yarn before they start working with it. To do a test rinse, what you should do is:
If your yarn doesn’t bleed- you’re good to go! If it does, it’s time to rinse your yarn to prevent any more bleeding! You can soak and rinse your yarn in warm water for 30 minutes, as many times as you need for the water to run clear.
If you’ve already started your project before noticing the bleeding, don’t worry! You can keep on working with it and then rinse the final product. This will stain the other colors if you’re working on a multi-colored piece. If you’re not too far into the project, it might be best to frog your work, rinse, and start again. It will save you heartache in the long run.
There’s also the option to colorfast your yarn. Many fiber artists do this for projects to ensure crisp and neat colors. It’s simple and effective across all types of fiber
Still bleeding? Now it’s time to rinse your yarn or project again and use a sheet of color collector to help suck out even more dye. We love our man Dr. Beckmann - he has saved more than a few of us here at DGY in our darkest hours!
If you’ve rinsed and rinsed until you’re blue in the face (and most likely hands) and your yarn is still running - it is most likely that your yarn was not set properly. Try colorfasting your yarn again and give it another rinse. If it is STILL bleeding badly, reach out to the company with pictures of your yarn and the water in the different stages of bleeding so they can help!
If you’re new to yarn bleeding, it can be freaky! What is this stuff made out of? Is it toxic or dangerous? Will it ever come off?
In most cases, you will be totally fine. Most dyers use natural or non-toxic types of dyes. For the companies that do use chemicals, the dye is usually only harmful during the dyeing process and not when the dye is bleeding off. Acid dyed yarns are totally safe as well. The acid that is most commonly used is citric acid, which is found naturally inside certain fruits and used in soda.
Here at DGY, we use either 100% natural dye or 100% non-toxic dye. The safety of our artisans and community are our top priority, and we would never risk that safety for anything - especially not dyeing yarn! Our yarns are dyed by soaking the yarn in hot water and the dye or by stretching the yarn out and hand-pouring the dye onto the yarn using bottles to get multi-colored yarns.
After dyeing, the yarn is rinsed and then hung out to dry in the toasty warm Indian sun.
Did that dye get cha? You’re not alone! Every fiber artist has had to deal with a bad dye job or two. Here are some helpful tips to get that dye off!
When it comes down to it, dye bleeding can be an annoying, but sometimes a frequent issue when you’re working with handmade or hand dyed yarn. When you’re creating with something that’s man made, mistakes can be made and bleeding can occur. Hopefully some of these tips and tricks will help you on your crafting journey!

]]>Earth Month, observed in April, is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting sustainability. Earth Month emerged from the Earth Day movement, which began in 1970.
Throughout Earth Month, various events and activities are organized worldwide, including clean-up campaigns, tree planting initiatives, educational programs, and advocacy efforts. The goal is to inspire individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to take action to protect the planet and its resources, fostering a deeper commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable living practices.
Sustainable fashion refers to clothing, footwear, and/or accessories that are produced, marketed, and used in ways that are environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable throughout their lifecycle. It encompasses a variety of practices aimed at reducing the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry, which is known for its significant resource consumption, pollution, and labor issues.
Sustainable clothing is beneficial for the Earth because it reduces environmental impact through practices like using eco-friendly materials, minimizing resource consumption, and promoting ethical production processes. It conserves natural resources, mitigates pollution, protects biodiversity, mitigates climate change, and raises awareness about environmental issues among consumers.
Simply, sustainable clothing helps to preserve the Earth's ecosystems and supports a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry.
