I wanted to make this for a 1-year-old girl, and from my research, they have average head circumferences of 17.5 to 18.5″. So let’s say 18. I noticed that one of the comments above mentioned that if you wanted an 18 inch circumference, cast on 11 stitches. However, when I did the ratio, I got a different number. If 11x=30, then x=30/11=2.7272…, multiply this by 9 and you get 24.55, if you round down that’s 24 stitches. Am I correct on this or was there something I was missing in the original calculation? 11 stitches seems very small.

Wow! It couldn’t be easier. At first I was trying to use too small of a needle. I’m using 8′s and you recommend 9′s but it’s perfect! thank you!

I want to make the Arctic Snowball Hat. I looked at the directions, but all it said was to cast on 30 stitches. Then what do I do??? It looks like maybe it’s just the knit stitch, but I’m not sure.
Please help!

So my head is a 23″ circumference(half the hat needs to be about 11 inches(I round down on hats b/c they stretch) and I cast on 30 stitches. So, normally what I do to figure out a pretty good estimate for CO is just make a ratio.
So say you have a kid (like 3 years old) with a 18″ circumferential, here’s my math:
11 = 9
30 x

x=11.7 so I CO 11 sts
