I bought 2 balls of the recycled sari silk that was on sale a couple of weeks ago. I want to try working with it and see what I can do. I am having trouble with the twists in the yarn. There are so many twists per inch that the yarn is corkscrewing as I pull it from the ball and try to knit a simple scarf. Is there something I should be doing to make the yarn work better? Should I pull it out to it’s full length or let it remain somewhat clumped? Appreciate the help as the yarn is lovely and I’d like to work with some of the other styles if I can figure out how. I like to knit garments. Are there more sweater, hat, etc patterns available for the yarn? If not how best do I calculate how much I will need for the patterns I like?
Lots of questions, I know. Thanks for your time.
Hey Sally. I’m going to also email you this, but I thought I’d post a link here for how to take out the extra twist of these yarns. Because these women aren’t professionals (they’re trying to make money for their basic needs–food, shelter, etc.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR7Tf9oCgpU
I love your featured yarn – Indian recycled yarn, but I wanted to see the pattern you spoke about. I couldn’t find Artic Snowball in your projects section. Can you send it to me, or give me an easier way to find it. How much yarn would I need to make the scarf??
I just viewed the FedEx site and saw your wonderful video! Not only was I touched by the great business you have developed, but the warmth and caring came across very clear and sincere. Your video started my wheels turning which is a good thing!
Soooo I just wanted to say Kudos to you for the inspiration!
Hi Nicole! I just received my order of 2# banana fiber. Thank you for sending it so quickly! It’s very beautiful!!
I was wondering if you have any tips on how to prepare and spin it? I seem to be getting it into big clumps and knots. The yarn that the package was tied with is very nice, was that spun with the coreless coil technique?
Thanks! Andrea
Hey Andrea! I’ve never spun the banana fiber, but I think it might be similar to the thrums. There are 2 ways you can spin it. You can core spin it (with/without a core), or you can scramble it up into clumps and then pre-draft them out to get a smoother preparation before spinning.
Ohh, that’s the sari silk thread! Gorgeous! I will have to try that next.
I used your scramble method to spin the banana. Love the way it turned out! I posted pictures here, if you would like to see: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.556981874332601.1073741826.161584497205676&type=1
Do you have any information about where this banana fiber comes from?
Thanks, Jen!
Andrea, it turned out fabulous. I mean, Fabulous. The banana fiber comes from India (I think Nicole said the southwest region?). I’m getting a batch of banana fiber from Nicole soon. I love how shiny the sari thrums are, and I’m hoping I can mix and match with the sari thrums and the banana fiber. Thanks for sharing!
Yesteday, your grandfather Mikkelsen was telling me all about your and your FedEx contest win. Congrats Nicole. You are a very impressive businesswoman who will go as far as she wants to go!
Everything works great. I got interested in your store because I am a former Mainiac (lived in Greenville and Millinocket for almost 30 years). I will be ordering soon.
The white sari silk yarn arrived yesterday, and was so beautiful I had to wind it during Downton Abbey. Do you know what it takes to distract me from THAT?
I’ve shared the reclained linen and cotton with my stitching group, and the friend for whom I ordered two skeins of the linen oohed and aahed over it, so I’m hoping there will be some interest among the ten Freestylers in checking out more interesting yarn on your site. Fingers crossed!
I ordered a felted purse from your website just before Christmas… Oh the guilt!!! I have to tell you… I LOVE it! It is amazing! Everywhere I have gone people ask me about where I got it and I of course tell them about your website. Apparently they all visited your website and bought all the purses!!!! But I want another one. Or two. I am sick. I am addicted!!!!! Will you be getting anymore big felt purses?????
Holy Moley Nicole!!
I just got my scarves and I can’t think of enough adjectives to describe how beautiful they are!! The softer ones I am donating to the oncology dept. at my local hospital. I think they will really look awesome on the ladies!. and thanks for the Yarn you put in.
Absolutley love your yarn especially the sari ribbon. Super fast delivery to OCONUS APO. You made my weekend. I make jewelry and the sari ribbon is perfect. I especially like the fact that my purchase may make a difference in the lives of women and children in another part of the world. Great energy in your products, purpose and website.
I just opened my order of the Sari ribbon yarn and I was expecting beautiful but it was beyone all my expectations! Absolutely wonderful rich color, packaged so nicely and I can’t wait to order more. I will be making crocheted bracelets with it as a fundraiser for a couple to adopt a child. So not only was your yarn recycled, helped a woman make an imcome but it will not help my son and wife adopt a child. Can’t wait to tell others and order more! Thank you!
I really admire your concept. I bought your yarn a few years back and am about to make another purchase. I have a few questions:
When will you get a resupply of the nettle yarn? Never used nettle before and therefore would love to buy it
It’s wonderful what you are doing to support women in India and Nepal but how do you ensure that they really get a fair wage? Is it via some organization there? It would be nice to know.
Lastly, some pics of how these yarns are processed would be lovely!
I have fallen in love with your yarns. I would like to know if you have a waiting list for sold out yarns. If and when you get more of the silk yarn with the gold thread I would love to be notified. I made two scarves with it that I donated to a church project. I would like to make more for them. Thanks for the awesome job you do. Liz
Thanks so much for getting my order to me so soon. I know the scarf and hat don’t take long to knit, but I’m 81, with arthritis in both wrists, so I just don’t knit as fast as I used to! With two balls of the same color, I can get the hat and scarf done with just a little left over. (the hat takes one ball and just a bit off the second ball.) For our fair, I plan to put these out, with your pretty note card framed, and will make a large sign with info, and will make copies of the press release for people to pick up. I think it is important that our customers understand what this yarn stands for. Thanks again–can’t wait for an excuse to order again!
I knit a cowl with recycled revolution. I don’t know what to do with my darned in ends. They are unravelling. If it were a rope id have the urge to melt the ends. What to do?

There are a ton of great patterns using the recycled sari silk yarn, and you can find them here: http://www.darngoodyarn.com/pattern-category/recycled-silk-yarn/
Nicole hasn’t made any full length sweaters for DGY yet, but she does have an adorable shrug (which I’ve made, and it’s super great): http://www.darngoodyarn.com/pattern/sari-ribbon-shrug/
Let us know if you have further questions! <3

Hey Joan! I know that Nicole already sent you the pattern, but I thought I’d also link it here in case anyone else wondered where it was: http://www.darngoodyarn.com/pattern/artic-snowballs-a-recycled-silk-yarn-winter-hat/ I love how adorable this makes everyone look! Good luck, and happy knitting.
I know you’ve probably answered this before, but I saw your 45 min scarf video and I want to make one, what yarn do you recommend.
Hey Lori. You could use any of the ribbon yarns from the DGY website. Here are some of Nicole’s suggestions:
http://store.darngoodyarn.com/products?search=180+ft&search-submit=
http://store.darngoodyarn.com/products?search=130&search-submit=
http://store.darngoodyarn.com/products?search=117&search-submit=
You can always make it longer by getting an extra skein of yarn. Have fun, Lori!
Thanks for all of your patience in helping me to get my order right. Please have a great week!

As for the yarn, it was this one: http://store.darngoodyarn.com/product/lux-adventure-collection-turquoise-sumptuous-indian-recycled-sari-yarn
I used this yarn to make a gorgeous necklace (I just overspun it, tied it into a small hank, then let it twist on itself)–turned out lovely!
Ohh, that’s the sari silk thread! Gorgeous! I will have to try that next.

Grabbed my attention at first site. Can’t wait to explore it. Also, love that you deliver to Canada.

I would love to see what the banana fiber looks like loose and un-spun. Is it like wool roving? Is there a sheen, or is it mat in appearance?
It would be fun to incorporate like roving into projects, especially since it can be dyed!
Holy Moley Nicole!!

Hi Lacey! That was a type.. I emailed you about it:) xo Nicole
Dear Nicole,
As I watch your site and learn more about you I am always amazed at your genorisity towards others.
If your friend needs help, then I want to be there to help her. Tell her my prayers are coming her way.
You are a great friend.
Jan
question = do you have a video showing how you “Recycle the Yarn”? What is the process, ect, ect….
Thanks,
Sandy
Hi Sandy, At this time I don’t have a video showing that! xo Nicole

Most beautiful yarn I have ever seen. The colors are so outstanding, can think of alot of things I could make wit it.
This yarn looks really exciting! I will be ordering some as soon as my $$$ start coming in. Thanks for supporting those in need.
Nicole, my order arrived today and the yarn is beautiful, as usual. Thanks for the treat, too!
