Q: So, this recycled silk, it’s your specialty right.. tell me more about it.
Darn Good Yarn’s Recycled Silk Sari Yarn is undeniably the most distinctive yarn you will ever come across as you embark on your crafting adventures. Silk remnants (from the actual creation of regional saris—not old used silk) are hand spun primarily by women’s co-ops and cottage businesses into luminous silk skeins for you to enjoy.
Not only will you get some great yarn you’ll be contributing to a grassroots economy in Nepal. When you craft up this yarn you’ll automatically be connected with the people, mainly women, living on the other side of the world. An immense amount of time and raw skill goes into each hand crafted skein. The silks are sorted, teased by hand and then hand-spun to create the yarn. We only do business with co-ops who provide fair trade and wages to the people who create Darn Good Yarn’s yarn. This in turn provides locals with wages, healthcare & education benefits for them and their families.
This yarn is sometimes called the following: Himalayan Silk Yarn, Recycled Sari Yarn, Recycled Sari Silk Yarn, Nepalese Yarn, Katmandu Yarn, Rungy Chungy Yarn, and Tibetan Yarn.
Q: How should I take care of my yarns purchased from Darn Good Yarn?
A: Dry clean or hand wash in cool water. Do not wring. Reshape and lay flat to dry. Or you can read more about care here: http://www.darngoodyarn.com/2009/10/silkyarncare/
Dry-cleaning your recycled silk garment is recommended if you want your garment to retain the look and feel it had when newly completed.
Recycled silk can be handwashed in cold water and dried flat. Be VERY careful to support it when wet to avoid stretching. Do not twist or wring. Lie flat to dry. The silk will “fuzz” a bit after handwashing, so the texture will be different from that of the newly completed garment.
Q: How long does it take to process my order?

Q: What makes your yarn so different?
A: We get the best, charge the least, end of story! Best of all, because we support fair trade and the local artisans around the world you will too when you order from Darn Good Yarn.
Q: What is your philosophy…on this yarn?
A: Good question. Aside from this yarn being 100% Child Labor Free. We concentrate on the promotion of Nepalese people to help secure their skills and lifestyles throughout the local region. For our recycled silk yarn, hemp and other accessories from Nepal, they employee village women through which various benefits are extended such as health care and education for their children. Fair trade and social benefit….and really great yarn….Does it get any better? We didn’t think so either.
Q: What are some of your knitting tips for DGY’s Recycled Silk Sari Yarn?
A: Well we’re glad you asked. As you use each skein (particularly more than 1 in 1 project) you will achieve a beautiful kaleidoscopic look. We prefer to mix this yarn with a solid yarn. It’s fun to throw into the mix when felting certain projects too! Don’t forget, if you’d like a loopy, lacey look, use larger needles.
When you’re knitting: The strands should be kept twisted this will reduce breakage. Occasionally, we find the yarn can break. We simply tie it back together with a simple square knot and you can’t even tell! We’re sure there are more eloquent ways to deal with breakage but this is the easiest and most universal. However, once you have your project knitted up you shouldn’t have any problems with breakage… it’s the strength in numbers theory:)
Q: What’s your return policy?
A: We’ll accept returns for all products in their original condition within 10 business days of receipt and will refund your purchase minus the shipping charges. Returns must be authorized through our customer service department. If you have a problem though we want you to be happy and will work with you to make things right.
